Be on Time
I WILL DISMISS YOU AT THE END OF CLASS, NOT THE BELL. _____Participation is twenty (20%) of your grade. Part of this 20% is based on what you do with your time in class. Repeat vocabulary and take an active role in the class. Each quarter, class participation is worth 100 points. You will start with 70 points. Each time you are not participating in class , you will lose 5 participation points. This is an observation grade made by me. You will have to earn the other 30 points by reading in class and volunteering, worth 5 points each time. _____Another part of the 20% is based on bell work (VÁMONOS). When you come into class each day, there will be a short 2 pt. activity on the board that you are to start working on immediately. It can be made up before or after school. _____Grading Your grades are based on the number of points you earn for the quarter. Points are received for homework, tests/projects, quizzes, and participation. The grading scale will be as follows: 97-100 A+ 93-96 A 90-92 A- 87-89 B+ 83-86 B 80-82 B- 77-79 C+ 73-76 C 70-72 C- 67-69 D+ 63-66 D 60-62 D-Participation=20% Tests/Projects=30% *Quizzes=30% Homework=20% ______*Quizzes may be retaken for up to one week after the original date as many times as you want. _____Homework Activities in the workbook are 10 points per page, worksheets have varying point totals. NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED WITHOUT A LATE PASS. Homework coupons (mouse) are worth 10 points each. You do not need to do the assignment; you turn them in instead of an assignment. These may also be used as 2 free points on a test or quiz.
Olés (Garfield) are worth one point each on a test/quiz or 3 of them can be traded for a free homework pass. Extra Credit: Offered a couple times per semester. _____Make Up Work It is almost impossible to make up what you miss in class. Every time you miss class, you will be behind! It is your responsibility to find out what you missed when you were absent. You will have 2 days for each day absent to turn in work. Assignments are posted on the board for the entire week. You can always look ahead. ISS and OSS students must get work before school and hand in on time!! Use the website!! _____Test and Quizzes All quizzes may be retaken up to one week after the original test date. You must come in on your own time, either before or after school. You may retake the quiz as many times as you need to, in order to get the grade you want. If I suspect you are cheating (ie: trying to memorize answers) you will lose this privilege. Missed test must be made up within a week of absence. _____Free Passes You will recieve 6 free passes each semester which may be used for the following:
**BONUS: You will receive points on the final for each pass you keep the whole semester. _____Supplies Obviously you need to bring your notebook and writing utensil every day. The following extra supplies are needed for Spanish:
_____Classroom Detentions *If there is as problem with a substitute teacher, there will be a penalty of at least three 30 minute detentions.* *Detentions will be 30 minutes in length and can be served “tonight, tomorrow morning or tomorrow night”. All detentions get a note sent home and a copy put in your permanent file. If you are removed from class, you serve an hour detention with me aside from the office punishment. Disrespect, swearing, and vandalism earn detentions. _____CHEATING/ Translators Translators are the work of someone else and not your own work. Any use of a translator results in a zero and a disciplinary referral for cheating!!
_____GRADES at semester You must pass the cemester and the final exam to go on to the next semester. ¡Buena Suerte! ESPAÑOL with Señora Campbell C ![]() You will be acquiring Spanish this year in some fun yet very effective ways. Our central goal is COMMUNICATION in the Spanish language. We will also explore Spanish-speaking cultures and make cultural and linguistic comparisons with our own. Connections with other subjects (geography, social studies, etc.) will be made through the language throughout the year. We will also explore opportunities to use the Spanish language outside the classroom in a larger community. How will we learn in this class? We will use many fun and interesting strategies to acquire the Spanish language. In the beginning I will often give you commands and you will respond by physically doing something. It's a lot like how you learned your native language when your parents told you what to do when you were very little: "Come here. Sit down. Eat your peas. Don't hit your sister.” ![]() Research on how we learn has proven that we remember better and longer what we have actually experienced physically. Gesturing and acting out commands will help you acquire the language more quickly. Another very powerful way to acquire language (also supported by research) is through stories. Stories We will create and even act out stories in class to work with new vocabulary. Often the stories will be silly, improbable, crazy or bizarre. This serves two purposes: 1) to maintain focus while communicating in the language & 2) to aid long-term memory. We use props and movement to make it easy for you to understand at all times. I prefer to laugh a lot in class and I hope that you do as well because we tend to have a lot of fun in class. Why isn't Spanish like some of my other high school classes? Spanish, like any language, is a skill. This is not a class where you can learn material for a test and then forget it. Acquiring a language is like learning how to ride a bike or learning how to swim. It's a skill you build gradually, use and remember a long time. Because in order to communicate successfully in Spanish you will need to continually know vocabulary, you may be tested over any vocabulary acquired in class at any time during the year. Sometimes this class will resemble an elementary classroom. This is desirable since we are working on acquiring a new language. How did you ACQUIRE your first language? It’s almost as though you are a “baby” in new the language but your vocabulary will grow quickly. Participation To have a great participation grade, work on the items in the positive column. If you do any of the things in the negative column, your participation grade will be lowered. You earn points by volunteering and reading in class. ![]() |
