5th Grade Weekly Update (Room 316): Weeks of February 10th and 17th


  • 5th Grade News and Announcements

      *Homework reminder: Students should read 30 minutes of a “just-right” book a night and then fill out a reflection about the book. The reflection is on the back of the math homework. A sample of the homework went home last month and examples are on the classroom website. Please call or e-mail with questions.

    * We are going on a field trip to the MN Zoo on Thursday, February 13th from 8:15-2:30. The field trip is completely sponsored by Target. We will have a zoo class, tour the zoo, and complete an assignment. Students will receive a lunch provided by the zoo and a snack for the school. Please do not send any food/candy or money with your child. It will be taken away from your child if discovered. Please return your child’s permission slip by February 6th.

Learning Target Information

Math

We are in Unit 4: Algebra. Students are learning situations involving equations and inequalities, situations surrounding variables, properties, order of operations, math rules, and ordered pairs. Homework is a continuation of review from previous units as well as Unit 4. Students receive it Monday-Thursday. If you have any questions, please contact me!
Reading

For reader’s workshop, we are working with literature and informational text. The skills for the next two weeks are nonfiction text structure and inferences from nonfiction. Some examples of text structure are cause-and-effect, compare and contrast, and sequencing. Homework is Monday-Thursday. Students read 30 minutes with a “just-right” book and fill out a graphic organizer. This is new, so please look at the website for more information as well as the handout that went home last week. Thanks!

Objetivos de Aprendizaje

Matemáticas

Estamos en la Unidad 4: Algebra. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo de las situaciones que implican ecuaciones y desigualdades, situaciones que incluyen variables, propiedades, orden de las operaciones, reglas matemáticas, y pares ordenados. La tarea es una continuación de la revisión de unidades anteriores, así como la Unidad 4. Los estudiantes reciben y deben completar tarea de lunes a jueves. Lectura

Para el taller de lectura, estamos trabajando con la literatura y textos informativos. Las destrezas que aprenderán en las próximas dos semanas son la estructura del texto de no-ficción y las inferencias que se encuentra en textos de no-ficción. Algunos ejemplos de la estructura de textos son los siguientes: causa y efecto, comparación y contraste, y secuenciación. Hay tarea de lunes a jueves. Los estudiantes deben leer un libro que corresponda a su capacidad de leer por 30 minutos y deben rellenar su organizador gráfico sobre lo que han leído.
