Summer 2015

Dear Parent:
Mater Academy Elementary School recognizes the importance of ensuring that students continue to strengthen reading skills and develop a passion for reading beyond the time they spend in school. Cultivating pleasurable reading helps build vocabulary and enriches students’ knowledge base. In addition, increased independent summer reading of both fiction and non-fiction books helps prepare students to be successful in meeting more rigorous academic standards as schools transition to the Florida State Standards.
Summer reading provides students with an opportunity for recreational reading, personal exploration, and continued intellectual growth. It may also serve as an essential component of the instructional process in schools. Research shows that students who are actively engaged in reading throughout the summer demonstrate improved academic performance during the following school year.
All incoming 3rd, 4th & 5th graders will be required to complete a minimum of 14 Reading Plus sessions as well as two literacy activities based on books selected from the attached reading list. Attached to this flyer is more detailed information outlining the required summer reading activities that will be collected at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. We thank you for your continued support in helping us to enhance the reading and learning experience for all our students.

Summer reading information can also be found on our school website at www.materelementary.com

Thank you in advance for all your support. Have a wonderful summer!

Verano 2015

Estimados padres:

• Use the internet to locate a postal, or email address of your favorite author. Write an opinion letter referencing one of their books. Use evidence from the text to state your opinion.

• Rewrite a scene and change the gender of the characters to explain how their traits, motivations, feelings and actions contribute to the scene.
