Specific Objective: To develop effective student communication in all three areas: listening, speaking and writing. Encourage students to think in a critical and creative manner, acquire respect for other cultures and learn to develop love for literary pieces. Different genres will be explored and students will express thoughts and ideas through the use of reflexive and creative writing.

10 weeks:

1.Introduction to course and Study Habits.

2.Diagnostic Test

3.Grammar Review (parts of Speech)

4. Types of nouns, pronouns and action verbs.

5. “Three Voices”, “The House on Mango Street”, “Tarzan Forever” and “Superheroes”

6.Journal writing

20 weeks:

  1. Letter Writing

  2. Elements of Fiction

  3. Linking verbs and helping verbs

  4. “Charlotte’s Web” Novel

  5. Reading: “The Lady and the Tiger”

  6. Setting,Predicting,Mood…

  7. Book Report

30 weeks:

1.Irregular verbs

2. Adjectives

3.Elements of Poetry

4. Readings : “The Sneetches”, “On the Streets”, “The Road Not Taken” and Pablo Nerudas.

6.Poetry Portfolio

40 weeks:

  1. Unit: Folk Tales

  2. “Why Dogs chase Cats”, “The story of the Owl”, “King Arthur”, “Life is Sweet at Kumansenu”

  3. Paragraph building

  4. Oral Report

  5. Role Playing

  6. Mythology

Grading Scale:

90-100 A

80-89 B

70-79 C

60-69 D

59-0 F

Evaluation methods: Test, Group Work, Projects, Oral Reports, Journal, Assessments and class participation.
